Monday Mood: Dare to Ask for Help

An unexpected workout!

Some time ago, we were already to home after one of our walks when we spotted an older lady standing next to a mobility scooter. The battery was nearly dead. We offered our help. She refused. She did not have a cell phone and it was at least another kilometer to our village. To make it even more difficult, the last part of the road is going uphill.

When asked how she would get home then, she told us that if she waited for a minute, she could ride around 10 meters before the scooter stopped again.

As this is a really quiet path, we insisted on helping her. She reluctantly accepted. As we always love a challenge and a good workout, Peter and I took turns pushing the scooter. The last part of the ride we had to push together to make it uphill.

We chatted along the way, and the older lady told us she was ashamed that she needed help. She did not want to be a burden to anyone.. We told her we were really happy she allowed us to help her – it makes us feel better as well!

“I don’t want to live in the kind of world where we don’t look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us, but anybody who needs a helping hand. I can’t change the way anybody else thinks, or what they choose to do, but I can do my bit.”

Charles de Lint

And we hope also someone will help us when we need it…
