Memories of Milano

Thinking back of the Duomo…

I visited Milano last year. It was bitter cold, but the sun was out, which was great in January. One early morning, we climbed the fairylike Duomo. I think we even were the first visitors that day!

In some places, you can actually feel history itself, and the Duomo is certainly one of those. Its construction began in 1386, and the final details were completed in 1965. It is the largest church in Italy, and the second largest in Europe. To us, it is now a strange concept: starting to build a church that will take centuries to finish. We always want everything now, we are not willing to wait for anything.

These days, we have to wait. We have to wait until this ordeal is over, we have to wait while this world has come to a stop. I can only imagine what it is like to be in Milano now, I can only imagine the grief, the loss and the pain from the safety of my own home. I can only pray that it will stop, that everyone will be healthy and safe again. Somehow, wishful thinking never felt so wishful…

Yesterday, I watched and listened to Andrea Bocelli, singing in the Duomo. It brought tears to my eyes. The accompanying images of the empty streets, the pure voice…

You touched me so surprisingly. Duomo is one of my favourite masterpieces and I have walked around is many times and never the same answer. How many spires.
I was lucky to see Bocelli when he was first introduced to the public at large, on the Spanish steps during a break of beautiful fashion show. Not just I. But the entire audience was captivated by his unique gentleness of voice.
Being patient yes, but we must also observe and appreciate. Clean air which we have never in our lifetime have had the opportunity to breath. It reminds me, of the English proverb, every cloud has a silver lining. It’s a change in our life which will throw up something which perhaps like me you always wanted. Love!! Perhaps each who seek will find.
